Welcome to the MED-PCS Project

A key factor in the socioeconomic development of European territories on the Mediterranean Sea is the growth in sea trade, in which ports play an essential role.
The competitiveness of ports depends not only on its own efficiency, but on the efficiency of all the operators in the logistic chain, and on the quality of the communications among them. Ports can and need to influence the efficiency of the management of the whole logistic chain, and on the communications among operators.
The comprehensive establishment of the "Port Community Systems" (PCS) is the best strategy to achieve that aim, but it must be accompanied by other measures which enable the external and internal users' utilization of the system to be fully exploited (internal modernisation of operators, information and training about its use), and the communication among the different PCS.

The key elements of the MED-PCS project's strategy are:
  1. the establishment and/or development of integrated PCS in the current ports' systems (not the development of new separate applications).
  2. the development of communication systems among PCS which does not depend on the administration of a new platform linked to a specific operator.
  3. ensuring the efficient utilisation by all potential users (informed, aware and trained).
The Partners involved in the MED-PCS project are: Tarragona Port Authority, Cartagena Port Authority, Levante Port Authority, Igoumenitsa Port Authority, University of Napoli Federico II, University of the Aegean and Rete Autostrade Mediterranee.

Outcomes of the Project
The development stage of the MED-PCS Project ends on 30th June 2015. The main outcomes of the Project are reflected in the Communication Exchange System and in the new PCS services developed in four Ports involved in this Project.

In the framework of the MED-PCS Project various training activities on PCS and on the new PCS’ Services have also been developed.
